Measuring sticks

1 So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

Galatians 5

*Beep Beep Beep*

My alarm goes off for the fourth time. This time I actually roll over to check the time...late. Again

I had every good intention of getting in a workout and some quiet time but now I'd barely be able to eat. What is wrong with me? I think to myself as I forage the fridge for an apple. Other people are so much better at this than I am. I'm such a mess!

I love the verse above. I love it because it comes from a God who knows my tendencies, our tendencies- to take scripture and make them marshall law, to miss the heart of the Word of God, to compare my spirituality to others, and to judge them just as harshly as I do myself.

So Paul warns us, because he knows that we've got this habit of selling ourselves right back into slavery. This is when I get the story of Hosea and Gomer, because like her I keep running back to familiar thoughts and patterns. It's so much easier to do that then to venture into the unknown.

But Jesus didn't come to give us another measuring stick with which to lash ourselves. He came to take them all away.

And today, I really needed that reminder.
